In the weeks before her tragic passing, Princess Diana was planning a move to Malibu, California. Though the palace has never confirmed these reports, Princess Diana's former butler and close confidante, Paul Burrell, revealed the newly divorced royal was ready for a new life in the United States. Now it seems her son, Prince Harry, plans to follow in her footsteps.
According to The Sun, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are looking for their own home in Malibu. Following a stint in Vancouver, Canada, the Sussexes recently located to Meghan's hometown Los Angeles. Harry and Meghan are "keen to find a private, beachside home to raise their 10-month-old son Archie." Harry and Meghan are reportedly interested in house hunting in Malibu for the same reasons Princess Diana wanted to raise her sons there—it offers the privacy they lacked while living as royals in the U.K.
Six years after Princess Diana's death, Burrell took part in a tell-all interview to promote his book A Royal Duty. During the interview, he revealed that Diana believed she and her sons would have a happier, more private life in the states. "[Their new house] was going to be in Malibu...I saw the plans," he said. "We sat on the floor, spread out all the maps and the layout of the house...She said, 'This is our new life, just won't it be great, think of the lifestyle the boys—nobody's judgmental here in America, you don't have the class system, you don't have the establishment,'"
While Harry and his brother Prince William would not have been able to live in Malibu full-time with their mom—Princess Diana shared custody with Prince Charles after their divorce—she was open to them traveling back and forth between the U.K. and the U.S. "Why couldn't they come and spend a portion of their time in America? That would be very stiff and staunchy if the queen would say, 'No, they can't go to America,'" Burrell said in the interview.
Not only does Malibu have a deeply personal connection to Harry and his mother, Meghan's mom, Doria Ragland, is also based in the Los Angeles area. Though it's unlikely the Sussexes will confirm reports they're house hunting in Malibu, it definitely seems like a great fit for the happy family.
