More info about Bear Necessities:

Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1992 by Kathleen A. Casey, CEO/President. The Foundation was named in memory of her eight-year-old son, Barrett “Bear” Krupa, who died after a courageous five-and-a-half-year battle with a Wilms Tumor – a type of pediatric cancer. During his long stay in the hospital Bear and his mother learned the many hidden needs of the patients and their families and discussed the formation of Bear Necessities. Today, Bear Necessities funds and operates two unique programs – ‘Bear Hugs’ and ‘Bear Discoveries.’ The ‘Bear Hugs’ program supports the immediate needs facing pediatric cancer patients and their families and ‘Bear Discoveries’ funds cutting-edge research to help scientists find a cure pediatric cancer. Pediatric cancer is significantly underfunded – a mere 4 percent of U.S. federal funding for pharmaceutical research and development goes toward finding a cure for pediatric cancers.
