Chicago suburbs rank among the best to live. In fact, the Chicago metro area “claims the most locations featured in the best 100 suburbs ranking.”

That’s according to Storage Cafe, which released its list of the best U.S. suburbs for city-like living. The Windy City’s suburbs beat out those of New York and Los Angeles with the most Top-100 cities to make the list. Storage Cafe analyzed more than 1,000 cities according to total median household income, housing affordability index, local employment opportunities, public schools ranking and other criteria. Southlake, Texas, located near Dallas, snagged the No. 1 spot on the list, but tons of Chicago-area suburbs made the list. These are the suburbs that made the Top 20, and how they rank:

  • No. 2: Lake Forest, IL
  • No. 3: Highland Park, IL
  • No. 4: Geneva, IL
  • No. 6: Burr Ridge, IL
  • No. 9: Northbrook, IL
  • No. 15: Deerfield, IL
  • No. 17: Glenview, IL

“Home prices in Burr Ridge, Illinois, increased by 20% on average,” Kheir Al-Kodmany, Professor at the University of Illinois Chicago, told Storage Cafe. “After a constant decrease in home prices in this suburb for the past 4-5 years, the prices shot up surprisingly last year.

“Despite the aging housing stock in that area, demand was increased. Houses that sat on the market for several years were sold largely last summer,” Professor Kheir Al-Kodmany said. “Taking advantage of the favorable climate, some homeowners remodeled their homes quickly and put them on the market asking for high prices — some were sold at unusual prices.”
